Where capable students come unstuck
Methods is the subject most VCE students take and the one most of them find harder than expected. The jump from Year 10 into Units 1 and 2 is steep, and Units 3 and 4 assume every bit of that groundwork is solid. Students who struggle here usually aren't bad at maths. They have one weak foundation — often index laws, algebraic fractions or function notation — and calculus built on top of it never quite makes sense. Finding that gap is where every set of sessions starts.
- Functions, graphs, calculus, probability and statistics
- SAC preparation and past exam papers under timed conditions
- CAS technique and a bound reference that works under pressure
What sessions cover
Functions and relations, transformations and graphing, differentiation and its applications, integration and areas, and probability and statistics including the normal distribution and confidence intervals. Alongside the content: exam technique, working past papers to time, CAS calculator fluency, and building a bound reference that's genuinely usable in an exam rather than just thick. I'm a PhD researcher at Swinburne University of Technology, where I teach calculus and statistics to engineering undergraduates — the mathematics Methods leads directly into. When a student asks why a rule works, they get the real reason, and that's usually what makes it stick. One-to-one or in groups capped at three students, in Officer and Pakenham or online across Victoria.
