The subject that decides more ATARs than people expect
General Maths gets treated as the easier option, and that's why students underestimate it. It carries real scaling weight, the exams reward accuracy and speed rather than insight, and marks are lost to careless work far more often than to not understanding. It's also the most CAS-dependent maths subject in VCE. A student who is quick and confident with their calculator will finish the exam. One who isn't, won't.
- Data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, matrices, networks
- SAC preparation and past exam papers under timed conditions
- CAS fluency and a bound reference that works under pressure
What sessions cover
Data analysis including scatterplots, regression and time series. Recursion and financial modelling covering loans, annuities and investments. Matrices, and networks and decision mathematics. Alongside the content: exam technique, working past papers to time, CAS calculator fluency, and building a bound reference that's genuinely usable in an exam rather than just thick. I'm a PhD researcher at Swinburne University of Technology, where I teach statistics to engineering undergraduates — the same statistical thinking General Maths is built on. One-to-one or in groups capped at three students, in Officer and Pakenham or online across Victoria. First assessment session is free.
